The Therapeutic Hope Mission

At Therapeutic Hope, our mission is to provide high-quality counseling ideas, products, and training to therapists, educators, and other helping professionals, equipping them to learn the theory, tools, and techniques of Therapeutic Hope Training and to build a hopeful mindset. Some of our primary beliefs include:

  • We believe that Therapeutic Hope Specialists should be part of EVERY Multidisciplinary Team (MDT).  MDTs are a group of professionals from multiple disciplines working together toward a common goal, most commonly in healthcare, education, or business.

  • We believe that people get stuck, eventually lose hope, and begin developing mental health issues. This process is at the heart of most developmental, educational, career, and mental health issues.

  • Traditional therapeutic approaches focus on coping with and managing symptoms. Hope has the power to heal through transcendence. Therefore, it is the key to thriving, rather than managing or coping!

  • We believe that people can benefit from Therapeutic Hope Training, which consists of three basic pathways integrated with five Therapeutic Hope steps: Meaning, Engagement, Accomplishment, Relationships, and Control.

  • We believe that Flourishing = Hope + Happiness + Resilience!

A Look at How Therapeutic Hope Works

Traditional Therapy

Therapeutic Hope Approach

Therapeutic Hope Approach

  • A person gets stuck and begins to lose hope, prompting them to seek therapy.
  • This therapy focuses on both the past and present, aiming to help the individual navigate their feelings.
  • The therapy keeps people stuck in thoughts and feelings.
  • Many problems can't be fixed, leading the person to struggle to feel better and cope effectively.
  • As a result, a negative pattern continues, forcing people to get stuck in the same type of problem that took them to therapy in the first place.

Therapeutic Hope Approach

  • People feel stuck, begin to lose hope, and feel helpless. They have a stuck mindset full of despair. Seeking support, they go to therapy that emphasizes positive psychology principles to build hope.
  • During the initial stages of therapy, therapists create a plan based on three Therapeutic Hope Pathways to help clients begin their journey toward Therapeutic Hope.
  • Therapists help clients work through the five Steps to Therapeutic Hope to transcend problems, move beyond their mental health issues, and Flourish.
  • People learn to embrace the healing power of therapeutic hope, rather than trying to "fix" their unsolvable problems. As a result, the person thrives and flourishes rather than merely coping, ultimately feeling renewed.

Three Therapeutic Hope Pathways

Therapists will help clients consciously challenge negative thoughts, practice gratitude, and visualize positive outcomes to rewire their brains for a more hopeful outlook.

They can use key strategies, including identifying and reframing negative self-talk, setting aside time for gratitude, and surrounding themselves with supportive, positive people

Therapists will help clients set goals in the five steps to Therapeutic Hope:

  • Meaning
  • Engagement
  • Self-Accomplishment
  • Relationships
  • Empowered Control

The therapist then helps clients design a lifestyle around their sources of hope, set SMART goals in each area, and work toward them.

Over time, hope becomes automatic and likely to be repeated.  Flourishing becomes a powerful catalyst for change in the client's life.

Reproducible Workbook Series

Positive Psychology: The Steps to Mental Health Series is a reproducible five-workbook collection that offers an innovative, evidence-based approach to treating mental health issues. This series is designed to empower mental health professionals to guide clients in cultivating hope, enabling them to emerge from depression stronger, more resilient, and infused with optimism.

Developed by Drs. Michelle Scallon and John Liptak, Therapeutic Hope is firmly rooted in the principles of Positive Psychology, Carl Jung's Developmental Growth Model, and Abraham Maslow's Self-Transcendence Need. This series incorporates the groundbreaking Hierarchy of Hope theory to create a structured pathway out of despair.

Each workbook is rich with assessments, therapeutic plans, and guided journaling exercises tailored to meet clients where they are in their healing journey. By helping clients generate hope and discover new meaning in their experiences, The Hope Series encourages them to redefine their sense of purpose and look toward the future with optimism. Furthermore, it introduces Protective Hope Habits that enhance resilience and psychological well-being.

With The Hope Series, hope transforms into a powerful therapeutic force for positive change, resilience, and improved mental health in your clients. You can purchase the series from Whole Person Associates at Positive Psychology - The Hope Series.

Frequently Asked Questions

Therapeutic Hope is designed to help clients experiencing many diverse types of mental health issues overcome their current situation and create a hopeful future.

When you are working with individuals, the reproducible workbooks provide many ideas for session topics. You can also ask clients to complete workbook activities at home and bring them back in the next session for discussion.

When you are working with groups, the reproducible workbook activities are excellent for initiating a discussion among participants. The activities can be used in conjunction with traditional therapeutic techniques, or as stand alone techniques for any mental health diagnosis.

Hope is directly correlated with academic success. I spent four weeks in Romania teaching the Therapeutic Hope process to teachers, parents, and school guidance counselors.

  1. They created a system in which the counselors would rotate among classrooms once a month and teach a lesson in hope using the reproducible workbooks.
  2. Additionally, we were training parents to be mentors for after-school programs.
  3. You could also train teachers to administer hope activities in the classroom to initiate discussions.
  4. Peer hope session training is also effective.
  5. Schools can also train Therapeutic Hope Specialists to work with students who present as depressed, chronically anxious, or chronically stressed.

Psychologist Carl Jung famously stated that the most significant problems of life are not solved. They are not “fixed.” Problems are outgrown or transcended. They are overcome through psychological growth, a shift in mindset, and a renewed hope for the future. This "outgrowing" involves experiencing the problem differently, seeing problems as opportunities, integrating new aspects of yourself, and ultimately gaining a new perspective that allows you to transcend the issue.

Therapeutic Hope is effective with individuals of all ages, including children, adolescents, and adults. It can be used in individual therapy sessions, group counseling, or educational settings. It is best used by a trained Therapeutic Hope Specialist working on a Multidisciplinary Team.

Therapeutic Hope was created by John Liptak, Ed.D., a therapist who began writing about hope in his best-selling workbook Journey to Transcendence. This is where John researched and developed the three pathways to hope (Goal Orientation, Optimistic Attitude, and Positive Outcomes). John used the principles from this book to research and further develop his theory. John's research suggests that by generating extreme levels of hope, people can move past many issues, problems, barriers, and challenges.
