The Therapeutic Hope Center (THC) is a research facility designed to conduct scientific, quantitative, and qualitative research on the healing and helping effects of hope. While hope is often considered an esoteric concept, our current research suggests it is one of the most vital components of mental health and wellness. We have found that hope is actually the key to reducing mental illness while enhancing mental wellness. Our research suggests that hope removes despair, hopelessness, and helplessness.
At the THC, we find that therapeutic hope tools and techniques make an amazing adjunct to traditional therapeutic approaches. However, while historically viewed as an adjunct, many therapists now advocate for cultivating hope as a focal point or targeted intervention itself, recognizing its transdiagnostic impact on conditions like depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and trauma.
By incorporating the concept of Therapeutic Hope, therapists can foster Hope Habits and explore and implement Sources of Hope. This Positive Psychology approach can be used with many different DSM Diagnoses.
Therapists accomplish this by setting manageable, realistic goals, identifying pathways to achieve them, and focusing on the client's values and past successes rather than on problems and failures. Hope acts as a 'mechanism of change' across various mental health conditions, improving treatment outcomes and enhancing recovery efforts.
