John traveled to China to work with young people who felt trapped by limited education, unable to leverage their innate skills for employment in the 21st century. They believed they were stuck, but what they truly lacked was a sense of hope and purpose. By introducing them to the concepts of the Hierarchy of Hope and positive psychology, John aimed to instill Protective Hope Habits that could transform their outlook on life.

John collaborated with community members, including parents, teachers, and counselors, who were concerned that their young people had lost hope and were experiencing learned helplessness. To combat this, John introduced Therapeutic Hope techniques, which are grounded in the principles of positive psychology, to help participants develop Protective Hope Habits and become effective Hope Mentors within the Hierarchy of Hope.

John spent four weeks in Romania teaching teachers and school counselors about the importance of the Hierarchy of Hope in fostering positive psychology among students. By developing Protective Hope Habits, this SEI training empowered students to build confidence and cultivate greater hope. The program has since been implemented on a country-wide scale.
